According to folklore, a Chinese emperor from ancient times gave his chief eunuch a three-month deadline to plan the world’s most magnificent tower for Beijing's Forbidden City, or face execution. Thinking that none of his designs was up to par, the eunuch gave up in despair. On the final night, he instead decided to build a cage for his pet cricket. The moment the emperor clapped eyes on the cricket cage, he was stunned by its beauty and commanded that the Forbidden City’s watchtowers be built to the same design. By Marco Hernandez
